We all know that the rodeo world circulates around the rush of adrenaline, dirt, and competition. The thrill of man versus beast has fueled big crowds and big entertainment for many years.
What many do not know is that there is a world behind rodeo that has much more to offer. The times behind the chutes when a youngster is inspired by a competitor taking a moment.
Recently while photographing a Christian Youth Rodeo event I took the opportunity to take my boys with me to work. Prior to the rodeo start time I spent a little time roping a dummy and getting to know these future champions of the sport of rodeo. As my play time ended and I started preparing for work I turned back and found this young man teaching my 5 year old how to rope.
Now it is much more than just an older boy teaching a youngster the basics to roping, see my boy is mostly deaf and has to wear hearing aids to hear. Add to this my boy like many children with hearing issues has some challenges with communicating. But none of this mattered, this was simply about a young man seeing an opportunity to influence another with a good gesture.
If the world wants to know what the heart and soul of rodeo is they may want to go their local arena that does not have the big name of rodeo. They need to go hang out around a world where the big check is not the defining moment. The big moment is when a young man recognizes an opportunity to help another, and this is going on in small arenas all over America!
Huge thank you to the Christian Youth Rodeo Association for allowing us to be apart of watching these young men and women grow. Also, thank you to Crossroads Cowboy Church for holding the Sunday Morning Service and hosting the event at your arena!

This year, as most everyone knows, we had the honor of beginning down the road of PRCA photography. For those who are unaware as to what PRCA stands for, it is the Pro Rodeo Cowboy Association; a great honor to be working with this group!
With this being our first year, we started preparations for the challenges of booking rodeos to attend to; the very first rodeo that offered to give us a shot was the Crown Motors Ram Regional Rodeo, which occurred May 23rd-24th, this year.
This Rodeo is the first of many that we will be and have been traveling to and we want to thank them for being the first to give us a chance!
If you are ready to start planning your Rodeo Calendar; you can Mark the Crown Motors Ram Regional Rodeo down for May 27th and 28th, 2016 in Park Hills, MO!

This year marks the 79th Annual Original Will Rogers Rodeo in Vinita, Oklahoma; and Avid Visual Imagery will be there to capture the memories!
Will Rogers was born in 1879. At the age of 11, Will's mother passed and he was sent to several schools. Amongst his schooling, was the Willie Halsell College, located in Vinita, which soon became his favorite. He attented until 1895 and always remembered the happy times, with the friends that he had made. In 1934, at a school reunion, Will told those around him that if they "have a rodeo here next year, and I'll come back!"
Sure enough, the following year, Will returned for the old-timer's parade; but unfortunately on August 15th, 1935, just days before the Rodeo, both Will Rogers and Pilot, Wiley Post were tragically killed in a plane crash. From there, it was decided that the Vinita rodeo would be held as a memorial to Vinita's "son", Will Rogers.
Since then, the Will Rogers Memorial Rodeo has become one of the most popular Rodeo's in the Southwest!

What Does Avid Visual Imagery Have to offer?
As a company that spends allot of focus on rodeo, we attempt to communicate with as many people as we can in the industry.
Every conversation comes to what can we offer besides pictures. This is where many people are surprised at the vast amount of capabilities.
When you put Avid Visual Imagery to work you get much more than a photographer, you get the capabilities to produce things like;
• Promotional banners that can be printed and used to advertise your event
• Social media graphics, these are custom built and have huge value in catching your potential attendee’s attention through social media outlets.
• Advertising for your event and your sponsors, when Avid Visual Imagery agrees to work an event weeks prior to the big day we run numerous promotional pushes through both social media as well as our client lists. One a weekly basis up to 2800 people will see your event as well as your sponsor’s involvement.
• Promotional photography, prior to the actual event Avid Visual Imagery will collect a photograph list. This list will be our focus prior to your event and will eventually become a collection of images that you can use for promotional purposes in the future.
• Appreciation and Thank You designs, after your event there is nothing better than to properly thank your sponsors for being involved, we can take a picture form your event and customize it to show this appreciation for years.
The real question that becomes prevalent is besides rodeo are we able to do some of these same things? The simple answer is yes, we work with many businesses to both advertise their involvement in events as well as provide them with tools to promote their business as advertise all they have to offer.
If you are the coordinator of an event or a business owner and you want to get noticed give us a call, let us show you what we can do!
This year Avid Visual Imagery has had the continued privilege of Photographing some of the Christian Youth Rodeo Associations events.

It is believed that competitive barrel racing was originated in Texas; where the WPRA was developed in 1948, by a group of women, who were searching for a place in the sport of Rodeo.
In the beginning, the WPRA was known as the GRA (Girls Rodeo Association). They started out with 74 members and only 60 approved tour events. The year 1981, was the year that the GRA changed their name to the WPRA (Women's Pro Rodeo Association).
How is this event laid out?
In barrel racing the purpose is to make a run as fast as possible. The times are measured either by a device using a laser system to record times, or by a judge who drops a flag to let the timer know when to hit the timer stop. Judges and timers are more commonly seen in local and non-professional events. The timer begins when horse and rider cross the start line, and ends when the barrel pattern has been successfully executed and horse and rider cross the finish line. The rider's time depends on several factors, most commonly the horse's physical and mental condition, the rider's horsemanship abilities, and the type of ground or footing.
Beginning a barrel race, the horse and rider will enter the arena at top speed, through the center entrance (or alley if in a rodeo arena). Once in the arena, the electronic timer beam is crossed by the horse and rider. The timer keeps running until the beam is crossed again at the end of the run.
To the right, you will see a sample of a typical Barrel Racing Pattern. Strength and agility are two important factors to horses that compete in Barrel Racing.
Herington, Kansas is located in the southeast corner of Dickinson County and is associated in history with Father Juan de Padilla, Kansas' first Christian martyr who accompanied the Coronado expedition of 1541. He lost his life in this area trying to convert the local Indians. A monument was erected in the North City Park of Herington to commemorate the tragic event. The park was later named Father Padilla Park.
The City of Herington was named after it's founder, Monroe Davis Herington; who was born April 23, 1843 in Lenawee County, Michigan. His name at birth was Davis Monroe Herrington, however, he always wanted to be a doctor so he called himself M.D. and dropped the second "r" in his last name, Herington. Mr. Herington received a warranty deed from the Alioths on August 2, 1880.
Mr. Herington, a widower, had married Jan Waters Parkin, a widow, on June 17, 1880 who had a daughter, Drusilla, and his three children were Monroe Davis Jr., Diana (also called Ena), and Alice.
M. D. Herington was a shrewd businessman. He knew that to build up the virgin land into a city, he would need a railroad running through the town he envisioned. He acquired 30,000 more acres of land and at one time owned 100,000 acres. He gave money for a depot and right-of-way land to the Topeka, Salina and Western Railroad in 1884. In 1885, it became the Missouri Pacific Railroad and was the first railroad to cross near the ranch. The small wooden depot was torn down after passenger service stopped.
In World War II, Herington Army Air Field was one of only two fields that processed heavy bombardment crews and equipment staging to the coasts for overseas duty. The field was later turned over to the City of Herington and is currently used as a municipal airport. Also, the City rents or leases several of the buildings at the former base for private industry.
On April 13, 1932 M.D. Herington passed away in Herington, Kansas.
Herington is the hub of the Tri-County area for Dickinson, Morris and Marion Counties. It lies on the Dickinson County side of intersecting lines drawing people from the farming communities, to railroading, agriculture, business and industry.
Flash Forward to the future. Every July, for the past 68 years, Herington, KS has been the home for the events of the Tri County Free Fair. This fair features; the PRCA Rodeo, a parade, games, food, and carnival rides.
This year, Avid Visual Imagery will have the pleasure of capturing the memories of this Fair, we hope to see you there!
What a wonderful day to spend at the park.
Better yet; it was a wonderful day in general, spending time with this very much in love couple.
